Literature Text

Ivan was always a loner since he was still in elementary school. As a little child Ivan never dared to speak with anyone except his to own family. The Russian boy always sat on corner and only watching other kids playing tag. Things get harder as he grew. His lack of interaction made everything awkward so he never start a conversation and even if he does he would never look at a person directly to the eyes.  Shy little Ivan, that’s how his older sister, Katyusha addressed him as. As he reached  the appropriate age he went to high school. Ivan’s shyness made him a quiet person and an easy target for bullies. They took his lunch, messed with him while he was trying to do his assignment.

5 months had passed and he still had no friend. He sighed as he closed his locker. Lonely as ever.  Ivan cursed himself for being socially awkward. Everybody in the school seemed to avoid him. Okay, he couldn’t make good jokes, he heard that people said his smile was creepy and worst of all Ivan is not a fun people to hang out with. Well, the last one was what Alfred said. That dirty blonde haired boy constantly calling him ‘commie’ for being a Russian. This made Ivan felt so small. As the result, he skipped school quite often. He pretended to be sick and suprisingly good at it.

Sooner or later, no matter if he is a loner or not as a human being of course he would need to talk with someone in the end. Internet is the only option since going outside the house right now was not a good idea. And so he began to go to a site where you can talk with strangers.

  Finally after disconnecting lots of “weird and creepy” people he met a normal guy. Older than Ivan himself but still can be considered as young.  And they started to talk;

“ Hi”

“ Hello.”

“ What’s up?”

“ Nothing much. Kinda bored. You?”

“ A little sick and bored too.”

“ I hope you will feel better soon.”

“ Thanks ))”

“  Are you a Russian?”

“ Yeah but I live in USA”

“ I see ..”

“ I was just curious but how old are you?”

“ 16”

They talked  and talked. Hours passed by and Ivan learned few things about this stranger.

The stranger was a Chinese and lives in China.

The stranger was also a boy.

Ivan felt happy. He talked to a total stranger and the stranger seemed to enjoyed their conversation.

“ Do you have Facebook or something? I really enjoyed talking to you and .. well ... maybe we can be friends?”

Ivan waited hopefully for the reply. This is his chance of getting a friend and he really, really hoped the Chinese would say yes.

“ Ah yes I do have Facebook but the thing is .. I don’t go there anymore. We can still keep in touch by e-mail though.”

Ivan grinned. He made a friend! Finally!

“ Oh that’s okay! ))) What’s your e-mail?”

“ Sh1natty.chan@cmail.com”

Ivan paused for a moment, staring at the mail address. Was he really talking to a boy or .. ah whatever he got a friend and that was what matter.

“ Alright! ))”

Having a new friend changed him a little. He was still a shy teenager but much more cheerful. Everyday he got home the first thing to check is his e-mail box. Ivan could stay up late only to talk to this new friend of his. He sure was really happy.

“ Hey, I never know your name. Do you mind if I ask?”

“ No, not at all~ My name is Ivan )”

“ Oh okay, Ivan. Mine is Yao.”

“ Oh by the way I’ve got Skype! Do you have a Skype account? I’d like to add you there!”

“ No, but I can get one I guess. Is it free?”

“ Yep”

“ Alright I’m gonna install it.”

The two soon became best friends. They shared lots of things together. Culture, opinion on things and so on.

One day, Katya came in to his room and was surprised that Ivan was talking with someone via webcam. And she thought Yao was a girl.

“ Sestra, Yao is not a girl ..”

“ Ah, really?” The short haired woman blushed of embarrassment for mistaking him as a girl.

“ Da.”

Katya hurriedly leave after apologizing. Instead of being annoyed Yao just laughed it off and blaming him for having a long hair.

“ Why is your hair that long anyway, da?”

“ Well, I really likes my hair. I will never cut it short so .. yeah, aru.”

The silverish blonde Russian giggled at the reasoning. “ How many people have mistaken you
as a girl?”

“ Many actually , aru so I am used to it.”

“ Ooh.”

“ Yeah ..”

“ Eh, I just remembered that I have a homework to be done, da. I better go now. See you later~”

“ Okay. Bye.”

Ivan felt weird. He got a sudden stomachache everytime he was talking to Yao. He wasn’t sure why but he blamed what he ate. He drank medicine but it didn’t really help, only erase the pain for awhile than it happened again. Sometimes he blushed too. And it was really disturbing. “ Am I sick?” He asked himself. His brain wasn’t able to give any answer and so he pushed away the thought. Later on he finally concluded that he was nervous but not sure of what.

Days by days it worsened. Now everytime he was thinking of Yao the sudden stomachache striked. Finally Ivan asked his sister. Not telling that the person he thought off was Yao of course.

“You got stomachache everytime you think of a certain someone?  Maybe you like that someone?”

“ I do like that person. That someone is my friend after all ..”

“ No, what Sestra meant is like ... love?”

Ivan felt like strucked by lightning. Love? How could that even possible? He loved Yao. That sounded wrong. But probably what his Sestra told him was true. That explained why he kept blushing.

Ivan rarely talked with Yao ever since. He was afraid. He would go invisible on Skype and Yao’s status was always online. This made him felt guilty for suddenly disappearing.  After awhile he finally made his decision. Tell Yao the truth. This wasn’t a good idea but he can no longer bear the feeling. To make everything less harder he talked to him without using webcam.

“ Hey Yao ..”

“  Oh hi, Ivan. We haven’t talked for awhile.”

“ Yeah ...”

“?? What’s wrong?”

“ Nothing”

“ Okay then.”

“ Anyway Yao, I have to tell you something ..”

“Yes?”

“ Well I ..” Ivan stopped. Oh for goodness’ sake could he even write all the words.

“ You what?”

Ivan stared at the computer screen. His fingers were doing that dance when you don’t know how to respond to things.

Three minutes later his fingers started typing again, “ Uh well, Yao, I have to say that I am really, really happy to talk with you”

“ I do enjoy talking with you too.”

“ Hahah yeah”

“ So that’s what you were gonna say?”

“ Well, Yes! )))”

Ivan officially failed his confession. He couldn't do it. He sighed but then smiled a little.

“ Ah well, I can always tell him later ... maybe ..”
